Anytime someone invests in anything significant in their home or property – the question asked first is always ‘how long will this last?’ And when it comes to septic systems, it’s a question we get all the time.
The short answer on our end is – ‘it depends,’ because, well – it depends. Give or take – a brand new, top of the line septic tank can last you anywhere from 15-40 years depending on how well it’s maintained and cared for. The long answer is that there’s a lot of factors that go into this; factors we’re going to discuss today. Let’s jump right in.
Regular maintenance makes all the difference
The first factor is always maintenance. Ongoing, preventative maintenance will go a long way towards determining how long your septic tank will last and how well it functions. If you’re installing a new system – make sure you have some sort of reminder a year or two in to make sure you know when to call your tank specialists to come and perform a check up.
That, or what we recommend – is to get yourself on a preventative maintenance program. Yeah, it can cost a little bit more up front, but in the long run, it can save you a significant amount too. Why? Because for one – we’ll remind you when it’s time to service your tank. Two, it’ll help address emerging issues before they become expensive problems. Problems that can cost you significantly more in the long run.
Installation choice
The second factor that will impact the lifespan of a septic tank is going to be the choices you make during its installation. What kind of materials are you going to use? Where will the drain field be? What kind of make and model? How much capacity will your tank have? These are all important questions to make sure that you get addressed up front.
We also recommend making a more significant investment because trust us – the range in quality is substantial and the money you save up front on a cheaper model will not be worth the potential headaches that could await you. Be picky and choosy and by all means, live within your budget – but do it right.
